Pentecost
19 - 20 February

On its way from Santo to Pentecost, the airplane flew over Ambae's large volcano. It gave the team a chance to film its characteristic and spectacular crater lakes. This volcano has no visible vents at its apex, but it is active. Steam and ashes erupted in 2005 and its latest lava eruption was in 2011.

Pentecost island in the province of Penama measures 490 km² and counts approximately 17.000 inhabitants. Before it was named by Louis Antoine de Bougainville on Pentecost Day in 1768, the island was known in its native languages as Vanu Aroaroa, and has also been referred to as Raga or Araga.

The day began with the third attempt to reach Pentecost, home ground of Father Walter Hadye Lini. By now, the walkers were well known at Pekoa Airport.

The flight went well this time. The plane landed at the Pentecost Sara Airport at 10.30 AM.

Our logistics manager Charlie Leo had already consulted his local contacts, so the walkers were welcomed by Steven Loli to drive them to Angora en Lavatu, two neighbouring villages on the target list of the Walk against Impunity.

A place to sleep was awaiting the team at the Lini Memorial College Guest House, where a delicious meal had been prepared by Irene and Albert Loli.
